How can we defeat leprosy?

Towards Zero Transmission

The Leprosy Mission is committed to achieving zero transmission by 2035.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic slowed the process of finding and diagnosing new cases of leprosy, we believe our 2035 goal is still possible.

Here are four the key elements to our zero transmission plan:

Active case finding, contact tracing, and preventative medicines
Strengthening national health systems
Improving leprosy health information systems
Improved leprosy diagnostic tools

Towards Zero Disability

The Leprosy Mission provides a range of leading disability services, including reconstructive and eye surgeries, physiotherapy, orthotics, self-care groups, and protective footwear.

As well as this, our researchers are creating new and innovative ways to heal and prevent ulcers and leprosy disabilities.

We believe that there is still more we can do to ensure we offer the best possible disability services:

Making services more local
Improving disability monitoring
Improving self-care practices

Towards Zero Discrimination

Leprosy is a disease that too often comes with stigma and discrimination. We believe that the best way to start tackling this is by empowering self-advocates.

Each year, we train thousands of new self-advocates who are empowered to speak up for themselves and their communities.

As we empower persons affected by leprosy to speak out, we also empower individuals to access new livelihoods through training and job support. We organise self-help groups who achieve more through collective action.
