Who are we?

We are the world's oldest and largest leprosy-focused organisation, with over 150 years of experience. We are a leading global player in the fight against leprosy, working across 14 field countries.

Our research heritage

The Leprosy Mission has been a leader in the field of leprosy research for more than 70 years. We have played a role in developing the earliest treatments for leprosy, in innovative surgical techniques, and through the research of effective post-exposure prophylaxis.

Nearly every modern advancement in leprosy prevention and treatment can be connected to The Leprosy Mission's research contributions.

Our research today

Today we are undertaking research across Asia and Africa. In our 2025-2030 global strategy, we have set ambitious goals for our fight to defeat leprosy and transform lives. Conducting and applying research is central to our efforts to reach these goals.

The strategy outlines breakthrough areas of work that we must work on if we wish to achieve our goals.

To interrupt leprosy transmission in the countries where we work, we are researching, developing, and implementing evidence-based tools, especially early diagnostic tests and post-exposure prophylaxis.

To facilitate access to services to prevent and manage leprosy disabilities, we are researching, developing, and implementing appropriate treatment regimens to address leprosy-related complications, especially leprosy reactions.

The work highlighted in this booklet is only a snapshot of some of the many research projects that TLM teams are running.
